Whenever I’m taking a road trip through California a stop at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton, CA is a must – they have been open since 1924—largely based on the quality of this hearty dish. After all, they’re not called “Pea Soup Andersen’s” for nothing!

I love their pea soup so much, I get the “Travelers Special” which means unlimited bowls of pea soup! The soup is smooth, flavorful and completely vegan. They have a charming gift shop where you can buy small bags of dried split peas, and they actually have their famous split pea soup recipe printed right on the bags. I have been making this for years on the stovetop, but just converted it for the Instant Pot because it’s so much quicker.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Dried Split Peas
  • 5½ Cups Water
  • 1 Celery Stalk, chopped
  • 1 Medium Carrot, chopped
  • 1 Medium Onion, chopped
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, (optional)
  • ¼ Teaspoon Dried Thyme
  • 1 Pinch Cayenne Pepper
  • 1½ Teaspoons Fine Sea Salt
  • ¼ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 Small Bayleaf

Method

  • 1)

Rinse your dried peas well, then add all ingredients into the Instant Pot.

  • 2)

Set it for Manual / High Pressure for 15 minutes and let it do a 15 minute natural pressure release. If the pin hasn’t dropped on it’s own, switch the nob to venting and release the rest of the pressure.

  • 3)

Fish out the Bay Leaf. Pour the soup into a blender or use an immersion blender to blend until it’s very smooth. Taste and season more if needed, you can also thin it out with more water if you prefer. At Pea Soup Anderson’s, the optional toppings are Diced Ham, Crisp Bacon Bits, Chopped Scallions, Grated Cheddar Cheese and Toasted Croutons.
