I love making variations of rice krispie treats – they were a childhood favorite and every once in a while I still get a craving for them. Today I made Matcha and Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats – this is perfect for anyone who loves matcha like I do.  Standard rice krispie treats can be cloyingly sweet, so using matcha balances out the sweetness level  and you get a slight nutty, rich flavor from the brown butter.  If you make these, be sure to tag me on Instagram @foodisafourletterword

I used Sencha Naturals Matcha that I bought at Costco, you can also order it here.  It’s great for everyday drinking and perfect for baking. Matcha and Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon Matcha Powder
  • 6 Cups Rice Krispie Cereal
  • 10 oz Bag of Mini Marshmallows, divided
  • 5 Tablespoons Salted Butter

Method

  • 1)

Line an 8x8in or 9x9in pan with parchment paper and set aside. Reserve 1½ Cups of Mini Marshmallows. Melt 5 Tablespoons of Salted Butter in a large pot on medium high heat. Once the butter starts to turn a light brown color and has a slightly nutty smell, turn the heat to low and add the marshmallows. Stir well until melted, sift in 1 Tablespoon Matcha Powder and stir to combine.

  • 2)

Turn off the heat, add 6 Cups of Rice Krispie Cereal and the reserved 1½ Cups of Mini Marshmallows, stir until the cereal is evenly coated with marshmallows. Pour the mixture into the lined pan and even it out. Place the pan into the refrigerator uncovered for 15 minutes so it firms up. Cut into squares and serve. *Optional, use a pastry bag with a small hole snipped at the end and drizzle on melted white candy melts or white chocolate for decoration. Enjoy!

Hello! I think they’d last about 3 days sealed + at cool room temp.
